Due diligence tips prior to selecting a real estate agent

Updated: Nov 1

If you are looking to do a background check of a real estate agent in British Columbia, Canada, there are several steps you can take:

  1. Check their online presence: You can also do a Google search of the agent's name to see if they have any online reviews or a presence on social media. This can help you get a sense of their reputation and level of customer service.

  2. Look for any disciplinary history: BC Financial Services Authority maintains a record of disciplinary actions taken against licensed real estate agents in British Columbia. You can find this information and do a search here.

  3. Ask for references: Don't be afraid to ask the agent for references from past clients. A reputable agent should be willing to provide references or testimonials from satisfied clients.

  4. Look at their experience: Check the agent's experience in the real estate market and how many properties they have sold in your local area. If they have been in the business for a long time, they are more likely to have a track record and knowledge of the industry.

  5. Compare their commissions, fees and services provided to other agents.

  6. Meet them for a coffee! Face to face conversation is hard to beat and gives you a chance to ask questions and help determine if they are the right person for the job (they may even buy you a coffee :) ).

It's important to do your due diligence when selecting a real estate agent. By taking the right steps, you can get a better sense of their background, experience, and reputation in the industry.
